For the second time in three years Next Energy Management Systems has won a coveted award in the Food Processing Energy Management competition.

The Farnborough, Hants, based Energy Management and Temperature Monitoring Solutions company followed its winning achievement of 2009 with another prize in 2011.

It was given for the company’s success in cutting by 15 per cent electrical costs at an ACS&T Logistics cold store in Wolverhampton using its web-based wireless temperature monitoring systems.

For an outlay of £6,500, Next delivered an immediate annual saving of £22,000 a figure which will be repeated in future years.

Next upgraded the software controls of ammonia based refrigeration systems, taking account of the fact that electricity powering five refrigeration compressors and nine evaporators was bought at varying tariffs depending on the time of day.

Controls were changed to run the store at its lowest set point (minus 24 degrees C) at night when power is cheap and at a higher set point in daytime when the electricity is more expensive.

The system also automatically measures and records cold storage temperatures around the clock.

In addition to the Food Processing accolade, the 2011 installation by Next Controls earlier this year collected a further diploma in the Building Controls Industry energy management awards.
